Stereotype Poetry in Swiss German

I have received enormous amount of feedback about my Mapping Stereotypes project. Shockingly, most of it consists of expressions like “I just peed in my pants”, “OMFG, this is so hilarious!”, “You made my day!”, “You made my month!” or “You made my entire Mayan calendar“.

Once in a blue moon there’s also “Go fuck yourself!”, “You, stupid idiot!” and “Hands off of my country, you arrogant fascist!”

The only thing I have never expected is a poem. And a Swiss one, on top of everything!

And you know how stupid I can get, it almost made me cry because poetry in German always teleports me back to my childhood. I still haven’t figured out what “Schnörris” is but according to my squeaky and rusty Sprachgefühl, the rest of the words are definitely nice. So here it is, thank you, Peter Dörig!

Europakarte der Vorurteile

Herrlich ist sie anzusehen,
wie die Schweizer andre sehen,
Vorurteile noch und nöcher,
Yanko hat viel‘ Pfeil im Köcher.

Selbstverständlich ist die Schweiz,
ausgestattet mit viel Reiz,
halt der Nabel dieser Welt
mit viel‘ Hügeln und viel Geld.

Italien ein Drittweltland,
Deutschland ist ein Steuerland,
Österreicher sind die Dummies,
fehlen tun nur noch die Schnörris.

Und es meint der Peter Dörig
zu der Karte ganz gehörig,
nieder mit dem Vorurteil,
das viel‘ Leute halten feil.

Considering that the poem describes the neighbouring states of Switzerland, Schnörri must aim at the French.

That's a great poem! Even if the part were land came 2 times sounded a bit strange.

I think it's all part of a very organized intentionally repetitive pattern: -sehen / -öcher / -land / -örig. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. :)

«Schnörri» is a word in Swiss dialect and means loudmouth or bigmouth.

Das Wort feil gibt es im Deutschen bzw. zumindest im Hochdeutschen nicht... hab es auf jeden fall noch nie gehört. mfg

I think they mean the North Germans as they are speaking fast and appear often very arrogant to the Swiss - not 100 % sure though.

That's the most pretentious poem I've (unfortunately) ever read

Yes but it's Swiss. How cool is that? :)
