Jenaro Pérez Villaamil’s Spain in a Calendar

00 Puerta del Sol, Toledo

My once unconditional love for Spain gradually dried out as I had the chance to get to know the country better. There’s one fact however that cannot be disputed. Spain is beautiful. It’s beautiful now, it will be beautiful after a hundred years and it certainly was very beautiful in 1842 when the Galician Romantic painter Jenaro Pérez Villaamil made his collection of lithographs titled España artística y monumental (Artistic and monumental Spain). I selected 14 of his works for the next World Atlas calendar, España Antañona (Yesterday’s Spain). You’ll find views from Toledo, Seville, Zaragoza, Burgos, Bilbao and Madrid.
