Europe According to Spain

Enough hate mail with complaints I discriminate against Spain and all the wonderful prejudices that exist in this country about the rest of Europe. After Iberia According to Spain few weeks ago, here comes the real deal. As usual, I strongly suggest taking it with a sense of humor. You don’t want to be like the guy who wrote to me yesterday saying “Fuck you, Sicily is not only Somalia and mafia.” That would mean you totally missed the point, in which case I suggest a visit to my entire Mapping Stereotypes Project page.

Enjoy!

Otro estupendo trabajo. gracias! Be water, my friend, and keek going!!

Thanks, M. My official version about the Canary Islands is that they declared independence. ;)

catalan not spaniard
catalan not spaniard

Hey great job! Next time remember to clearly separate us catalans from spaniards though! I do admit: there are a lot of spaniards living among us in Catalonia (as well as muslims or ecuadorians) but that does not make us part of their nation.

I'm a Catalan and Catalan is as much Spain as Mancha, and that's how most Catalans and Spaniards feel.

Yeah dude... but it's actually the other way around. It's more like that part of Spain has some douchebags who think they're living in an invented country... pathetic, to say the least.

I don't get the 'catalan not spaniard' thingy. I was born in Barcelona, I've been raised in Barcelona, my entire family has grown up in Barcelona for generations and I feel as Spanish as someone from Madrid. Great map! You nailed it! I'd add 'weed' to Netherlands, though :)

Thanks. You're not alone in not getting the Catalan vs Spanish issue, few people outside Spain are aware of it and even less people really understand what it's all about. I've heard so many conflicting stories about it. Here in Castile there are even people who say one cannot get a public service job in Catalonia if you don't speak Catalan. Frankly, I don't know who to trust, everything seems so blown out of proportion.

Good job dude, most of it is more than true!! hahahahahaa Congratulations.

Oh, nationalism. People who complain about nationalism 'A' in Spain is because he feels he/she belongs to 'B'. And, as everybody knows, nationalism 'B' is always the best. But this is happening all over Europe. Nationalism -of any kind- is a great tool to gain political power.

Very true. But I think Spain, as a big heterogeneous country, offers some unique perspective on nationalism. For example, it took me a lot of effort to comprehend why is there animosity between some Valencian and some Catalans on a nationalistic basis. In addition to nationalism 'A' and 'B', there are specific 'A1' and 'A2' types which branch out in even smaller 'segments'. :)
