Rila Monastery Fresco 01

Last weekend I finally took a trip to the Rila Monastery.

It felt kind of majestic, even though I was slightly disappointed with the whole architectural ensemble. What really grabbed my attention were the frescoes. I’m not a fan of the mournful, introvert Orthodox style but these images felt surprisingly different, very human and dare I say, cheerful. Even the devils looked sympathetic.

I did some research and most sources attribute the frescoes to the Zograf brothers, Zahari and Dimitar.
